I just thought I’d share with you that Pearle Vision was burglarized
this morning at approx. 7:40am. Luckily nothing was stolen. The person
broke in upstairs through on old window and when he tried to come
downstairs the alarm sounded and scared him off. We were grateful for
that. The police took a report and forensics got a few prints so
hopefully this person will be caught! Just wanted to pass this along.Leanne Perry, A.B.O.C.

Virginian-Pilot: Wards Corner retail hub needs rehab
November 3, 2008The Virginian-Pilot had an article in Sunday’s paper titled “Once a gem, Norfolk’s Wards Corner retail hub needs rehab”
Wards Corner thrived decades ago, housing one of the city’s most upscale shopping centers that luxury retailers dubbed “the Times Square of the South.”
But times have changed in this heavily traveled section of the city.
“It’s a wasteland,” City Councilwoman Theresa Whibley, who represents Wards Corner, said recently of the area’s commercial district. “Any of us who saw what it once was are saddened to see what’s happened to Wards Corner. That area needs a lot of help.”

Yuliya Dobrydneva, WC resident: “criminal activity overflows into our community”
October 13, 2008Yuliya Dobrydneva, a Wards Corner resident, wrote the following Letter to the Editor, which was printed on October 13, 2008:
On Friday, Oct. 3 , at about 9 p.m., my teenage son was robbed at gunpoint right in front of DePaul Hospital on Granby Street. He was traveling alone in his car and stopped for the red light in the right lane. A young man with a hood and a bandana over his face and gloves on his hands jumped into the car, pulled out a large caliber gun, yanked the keys out of ignition, pressed the gun against my son’s head and demanded money. The robber took the money from the wallet, then lit up the lighter and burned credit cards, and splashed drink on my son before finally throwing the keys back to him. Only by the grace of God was my son not injured or killed.
The most outrageous thing is that this brazen crime happened in full view of people just a couple of yards away at the bus stop.
All this happened literally two minutes away from our house at Wards Corner. Our sense of safety and security is deteriorating. Just in the last two months, our house and our car were vandalized; drug addicts broke into our porch; our license plates were stolen.
We see unmistakable signs of gang and drug activity in our formerly peaceful community. What we do not see, however, is enough police presence on our streets. While the police efforts are primarily focused on the so-called ‘bad’ neighborhoods, criminal activity overflows into our community, which never before required stepped-up police presence.
Things need to be turned around before it is too late to save our beautiful neighborhood.

Blessed Sacrament gang prevention meeting report
October 9, 2008Tim Smith writes in with the following report on last night’s gang prevention meeting:
Blessed Sacrament Church will host a second gang-prevention brain-storming session on Wednesday, October 29th. For more information call 423-8305. The Church is located at 6400 Newport Avenue behind DePaul Medical Center.
The first meeting focused on youth involvement in gang activity. There were over 100 people at the meeting as well as the Mayor, Vise Mayor, Norfolk Police, prosecutor’s office and city juvenile court representatives. There were also representatives from the local schools and community groups as well as parents with their teens and concerned local residents.
The gang problem is real in our area and it affects everyone. In Hampton Roads, there still is time for us to get a handle on the gang problems but it will take our commitment as a community to act now before the gang issue gets out of control and rules our lives.
Please make plans to get involved in your community this year or next. Plan to attend the meeting on the 29th or one of the many other civic or community meetings you see posted on this web page. Get involved, get informed.
Remember, you get out of a community what you put into it.
Thank you,
Tim Smith, Talbot Park
Wards Corner area of Norfolk
EDIT: The meeting on the 29th of October will be at 7pm.
Update: Greater Wards Corner Neighborhood Watch Program
August 14, 2008
We had a great turnout for the first meeting of the Neighborhood Watch Program being instituted in the Denby Park, Oakdale Farms & Monticello Village areas. There were over 20 people at the meeting and many more signed up but could not make the meeting.
The Norfolk Police Crime Prevention Unit gave an excellent and informative presentation on crime prevention and neighborhood watch. A lot of information passed both ways, police to citizen/citizen to police, and we all look forward to working together to reduce crime in our area.
The group agreed to meet the last Tuesday of each month at the Workforce Development Center, starting with the 26th of August, at 6:30 pm. Some guidelines and ground rules were given and people signed up to be Block Captains and Watchers.
All the civic leagues and neighborhoods in the Greater Wards Corner Area Partnership are encouraged to send representatives to these meetings. As the criminal activity is pushed out of the West Little Creek Road area the other neighborhoods around should have watch programs in place to force the criminal activity out of the Greater Wards Corner Area.
The goals of the monthly meetings will be to:
- Help each neighborhood develop a watch program tailored to it’s own needs and to offer support as needed.
- Allow ideas and problems to be shared among the Partnership neighborhoods allowing us to work together as one to reduce crime.
- Promote safer neighborhoods and retail areas for our residents to live, play and shop.
- Make communication between communities and police more efficient and effective in reducing crime in the Partnership area.
- Communicate to our elected officials in a larger and more unified voice the needs of the Partnership area to help reduce crime in our community.
- Work in unison with the Greater Wards Corner Area Partnership general meeting group and the Wards Corner Task Force for the revitalization of the Wards Corner area.
Other areas of the city are currently working with the police to reduce crime in their neighborhoods and it is imperative that we move forward with this neighborhood watch program for the Partnership area or you may see an increase in criminal activity here. We want the criminals out of Norfolk not just moved around our city.
Thank you,
Tim Smith
