The Virginian-Pilot is reporting that 18 year old Kristen Steen pleaded guilty to second degree murder and a firearm charge and has been sentenced to 33 years in prison.  Steen shot and killed Jamal Mathews on New Years Eve in front of Game Stop in Southern Shopping Center.

Testimony [. . .] indicated that the confrontation between Steen and Matthews began when Steen asked “What’s cracking?”

“What’s popping?” Matthews replied.

Steen then shot Matthews. A witness testified at the earlier hearing that Steen’s greeting is used by Crips gang members.  Matthews’ reply is used by the Bloods [gang].

Steen is believed to have been a resident of, and captured in, Denby Park.

GameStop murderer pleads guilty

June 17, 2008

We first reported on the murder in front of GameStop at Southern Shopping Center on December 31, 2007 and again on January 3, 2008.  Now the Virginian-Pilot reports that the murderer, Kristen Lavon Steen, has plead guilty to second degree murder and to the use of a firearm in commission of a felony.  The article implies that the murder may have been gang related.

A prosecutor’s summary of evidence says that Matthews and a girl were approached by Steen and another male in the shopping center.

“What’s cracking?” Steen asked Matthews.

“What’s popping?” he replied.

Steen then shot him, the summary states.

The greetings are used, though not exclusively, by members of rival Crips and Bloods street gangs, the summary says.
