Raze the Apartments

October 5, 2009

Revonna Bieber of Monticello Village writes in with the following:

According to the NRHA Fall 2009 issue of “Neighborhood Patterns [PDF]” On Wednesday morning, April 15, a blighted 16-unit apartment building at 9430 First View Street was razed.   In its place, three single family homes will be built, bringing about a much needed change according to local residents and West Ocean View Civic League members.  NRHA purchased the property in July 2008 when 13 of the 16 units were occupied.

The property will be divided into three lots for homes ranging from 1,600 to 1,800 square feet with projected  price ranges of $175,000 to $250,000.   Construction is expected to be complete for all three units by spring 2010.

So why aren’t these improvements being made in our neighborhoods?  Blight is quite apparent, especially in the apartment complexes, in the areas of Denby Park, Monticello Village, and Oakdale Farms.  Why can the city buy and raize apartment buildings in Ocean View, Lamberts Point,on Hampton Boulevard, and Broad Creek but not in Wards Corner?

Gunfire in Denby park

April 25, 2009

Beverly Sexton wrote in about gunfire in Denby Park:

Shooting is in the air.  Not spring is in the air.  Last night [Friday, 4/24/2009] between 10:30 and 11:00 I was coming home from a dinner party.  I  turned down Galveston and got almost to the stop sign at San Antonio and bang bang bang and plus I saw the flash from the pistol down in the 300 blockof  San Antonio.  I stoped in the middle of the street and grabbed my cellphone and called 911.  It seemed like forever just ring ring ring.  I started saying bad words and they finally answered.  After I get home I guess it was not over cause I go out on my back deck and bang.  Just one shot.  Guess this person had target practice cause he hit his target.  My point is the weather is getting warmer and the meanest will come out.  In these trying times we really need our police to be out protecting us and let them work overtime or whatever it takes to protect the law abiding citizens of this city which we live in.

“It’s a wasteland,” City Councilwoman Theresa Whibley, who represents Wards Corner, said recently of the area’s commercial district. “Any of us who saw what it once was are saddened to see what’s happened to Wards Corner. That area needs a lot of help.”
