Weigh in on Traffic Congestion around Wards Corner!
September 4, 2014Greetings –
The Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) is requesting the help of the Wards Corner Now in identifying causes of congestion on major roads around your community. As the federally-designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for Hampton Roads, we are responsible for transportation planning for the Hampton Roads area, and are required to identify the region’s most heavily congested roads and develop a series of strategies that help move people and goods around more easily. This is known as Hampton Roads’ Congestion Management Process (CMP).
For the 2014 edition of the CMP, we’ve identified the 14 most heavily congested roadway segments in Hampton Roads, most of which we’re sure your familiar with, including the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (I-64), I-64 between I-564 and Indian River Rd., and I-564 between International Terminal Blvd and Admiral Taussig Blvd. We’ve identified what we believe to be their major causes of congestion, now we need your help by telling us if you think our observations are correct. The reason we are asking for your help is simple: Segments such as I-64 and I-564 serve as important arteries in your community, and is likely traveled by residents on a daily basis. We need folks to share their knowledge with us on what they think is causing the traffic.
It’s easy to participate. Simply click on the banner at the top of this message, which will take you to our survey page. Once there, select the stretch of road you would like to offer feedback on. If you are familiar with more than one roadway, please feel free to take more than one survey. Your comments and suggestions will be incorporated into the final Report, which will then be made available to local planners, engineers, and decision-makers for their consideration when developing project proposals for these congested areas. The deadline to make comments is September 19, 2014.
Again, your help in making this request available to members of your community to share their experience and assist in the Congestion Management Process in Hampton Roads is most appreciated. If you have any questions or we can provide additional information on this effort, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
All the best,
Brian Chenault

Frustrating lane closure at WC to end soon
September 3, 2014Thanks to Ray Ransom and Freda Burns, both with the City of Norfolk, for their quick response to my inquiry about the lane closure on Granby Street in front of the new TowneBank.
The cause for the closure is a sewer line collapse under the sidewalk. According to Norfolk Utilities, the sewer line has been replaced and final restoration should be completed within the next two weeks.

Wards Corner Rite Aid finishing up complete remodel
July 12, 2014
I spoke with the very pleasant Wards Corner Rite Aid store manager, Dan Lightfoot, about the complete remodel going on at his store at the northwest corner of Wards Corner.
The store was gutted on the inside and completely remodeled bringing it out of the old drugstore model and into the new wellness center model that pharmacies are going to these days.
The expanded wellness service will include a wellness ambassador who will be armed with an iPad and be able to assist customers on the sales floor with vitamin needs, drug interactions, herbal supplements, etc. The ambassador will have access to a printer to provide customers information on the products they are discussing.
Additionally, the remodel has allowed the pharmacy to become more accessible and expanded the organics options at the store. Dan touted the new store as a full immunization store that will begin offering flu shots in two weeks.
The outside of the store received a fresh coat of pain and the landscaping was updated as well. The parking lots will be resurfaced and repainted very soon.
The construction work is expected to be concluded by next week.
Norfolk Collegiate to improve, rearrange athletic fields; asks city for rezoning
July 11, 2014The below article is re-printed from the Suburban Acres Civic League newsletter, The Suburban.
Norfolk Collegiate School has applied to rezone residential lots it owns at 7307, 7309, 7311, 7315, 7317, and 7321 Woodfin Ave. from R-7 (single family) to IN-1 (institutional district).
The school plans to demolish the homes in order to expand and reorient athletic fields and tennis courts, making way for a new athletic building in the future.
Improvements include installing synthetic turf on the soccer/lacrosse/field hockey fields, and improved outdoor lighting. Collegiate officials say the lighting will be pointed downward, and will not be left on after events. The school does not plan any additional access points to the complex from Woodfin Ave.
The rezoning request is scheduled for a public hearing at the July 24th city Planning Commission meeting.
Headmaster Scott Kennedy and other Collegiate representatives will be at the July 14th Suburban Acres Civic League meeting to explain the project and show the school’s plans to the neighborhood. The civic league previously endorsed the school’s request for the city to abandon a right of way on school property at the end of Midfield Street as part of this project. Abandonment of the right of way, originally planned as a traffic circle/turnaround, was sought due to the expense of installing synthetic turf over that area.

Public art location chosen at Wards Corner
April 27, 2014
Wards Corner public art artist, Gordon Huether
The Wards Corner public art selection committee met last week on April 22 at Wards Corner with the chosen artist, Gordon Huether. Karen Rudd, Manager of Norfolk’s Cultural Affairs, was in attendance as well as various City department staff and a representative from the developer of K & K Square.
Huether walked and drove the Wards Corner area and reached a recommended location in the median on Granby Street at the current location of the Wards Corner Mermaid sign located just south of the intersection with North Shore Rd.
Huether preferred this location to something closed to the intersection of Little Creek and Granby as it has less audio and visual noise.
It is hoped that the art can replace the current sign and be a gateway piece that may incorporate a new Wards Corner sign.
Huether will mock up a few different options and bring those back to the selection committee in the near future.

Sam’s Club coming to old Kmart location
April 9, 2014
The Virginian-Pilot is reporting that Sam’s Club will be building a store at the old Kmart location at Tidewater Driven and E. Little Creek Road. The story:
Sam’s Club plans to open its first Norfolk store at the site of the former Kmart on East Little Creek Road and Tidewater Drive, according to documents filed with the city on Monday.
Sam’s – part of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. – is requesting permission to sell tires and alcohol for off-premise consumption. The company also wants to build a gas station that would serve the new Sam’s Club and an existing Wal-Mart to the south.
Sam’s plans to tear down the Kmart building that sits on the southeast side of the intersection of East Little Creek and Tidewater. In its place, the company would build a 135,000-square-foot warehouse for its club members, according to preliminary site plans issued with the requests.
Kmart occupied the location for nearly 40 years, but it closed last summer after officials of Sears Holdings Corp., Kmart’s beleaguered parent company, decided to close many stores across the country.
Norfolk Development Director Steven Anderson told the City Council on Tuesday that Sam’s is expected to generate $800,000 in annual sales tax revenue from $80 million in annual sales.
The store will cost $20 million and create 180 jobs, he said. An opening date has not been set.
Norfolk already is home to BJ’s Wholesale Club and Costco Wholesale, which are half a mile apart near Military Circle. Sam’s Club already has four stores in the region: two in Chesapeake and one each in Virginia Beach and Newport News.
