Litter Baskets Initiative to include Wards Corner

June 16, 2008

This month’s Civic Connection, produced by the City of Norfolk, mentions Wards Corner in an article about a Litter Basket Initiative.

Litter Baskets initiative – Public Works has purchased a number of litter containers that will be placed in high litter areas throughout the city.  There are criteria for selecting the locations.  The new containers were selected by Design Review and are similar to those in use downtown and along 21st Street.  Waste Management will empty the containers 3 times per week.  In the past, we have had a limited number of wire baskets for litter.  These will be phased out. The first area where we will be adding containers will be Ward’s Corner.  John Deuel and his staff have been working with the businesses.  We are exploring ideas of limited advertising on the containers.  This has been a combined initiative of the Norfolk Environmental Commission and staff and Waste Management.

Councilman Williams supports funding for Wards Corner before St. Paul’s Quadrant

June 11, 2008

The Partnership had predicted the day would come when the proposed St. Paul’s Quadrant Plan would jump into first place over The Greater Wards Corner Comprehensive Plan which was approved by City Council on December 21, 2004. To date, there has been very little implementation of The Greater Wards Corner Comprehensive Plan. Pilot Online reports the unveiling of this huge new downtown project which will relocate as many as150 low income households in one fell swoop. To his credit Councilman Don Williams thinks Wards Corner should get funding before St’ Paul’s. Williams said,

We need to do things in a pecking order,

Mayor Fraim was quoted as saying,

We have several competing interests we’ll have to sort through.

But in a city as large as ours, we should be able to do several large projects.

We shall see if the Mayor puts as much effort in his support for Greater Wards Corner as he puts in Downtown.

It was too good to be true

June 8, 2008

Denby Park has been relatively quiet lately as far as gun violence is concerned, but early this morning that quiet was shattered. Police Dispatchers were called at 3:45 a.m. to report a shooting in an apartment in the 300 block of E. Little Creek Road. Pilot Online reports

When officers arrived at the complex, they found a man suffering several gunshot wounds inside an apartment, Amos (police spokesman) said. The man was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that were considered life-threatening.

Amos said no suspect or motive information was available shortly before 4 a.m., Amos said.

The Wards Corner Partnership has repeatedly expressed its concern about the apartments in the 300 block of E. Little Creek Road. If there was ever an example of social blight, the 300 block would be the picture in the dictionary.

Two Wards Corner book merchants are experiencing increased sales

June 7, 2008

According to Pilot Online, The Book Exchange and Bargain Books are experiencing better sales this year in spite of the downturn in the nation’s economy.

two used-book stores in the Wards Corner section of the city – Bargain Books of Virginia and The Book Exchange – are doing better this year.

John Knight, owner of The Book Exchange, estimates a 20 percent jump in business. “We try to continuously make the store better and turn the inventory over a lot,” he said. The economy “has had a neutral effect. We might get more of some people and less of some other people.”

Lynn Howard bought Bargain Books in November 2006 . “My business increased,” she said, “but I think it was more because I was getting more new books in. We’re finding more and more new customers.”

Pretlow Anchor Branch Library in Ocean View on June 26th.  Councilman Wright will make his first presentation on the “Tide” to Ocean View. Look for times in a future post. Any route to Ocean View should include a rail station in Wards Corner. It is important that all concerned citizens attend this meeting.

CrimeView Community

May 21, 2008

CrimeView Community

The Norfolk Police Department has launched Crime View Community, an interactive crime mapping website that allows residents to view certain crime statistics by location and time.

CrimeView Community is an interactive crime mapping program that allows the user to search the City of Norfolk by address, civic leagues, police precincts as well as proximity searches to landmarks in the City of Norfolk for certain types of crimes that have occurred over the previous one hundred twenty days.

The website works remarkably well. You can search by civic league, police precinct, sector, planning district, ward, or zip code. Unfortunately they did not include a way to search the entire Partnership/Taskforce area with one search. Nonetheless, everyone is encouraged to utilize CrimeView to stay informed of crime in their area.

May 20, 2008

Pilot Online reports that an elderly woman was taken to a hospital after her car hit the Rite Aid store on the northwest corner of Granby Street and Little Creek Road. It is suspected that the lady hit the gas pedal rather than the brake. The 86 year old woman suffered minor injuries and the building was undamaged.

Downtown section of light rail $14.7 million over budget

May 15, 2008

Several years ago, H.R.T. came to a meeting of the Greater Wards Corner Partnership asking for our support of light rail for Norfolk. We were promised that the second leg of light rail would run through the Wards Corner Business District with a light rail station at the Wards Corner H.R.T. Bus Transfer Station. The Partnership gave its overwhelming support for the light rail project.

For light rail ridership to be successful, lateral bus lines must be near a rail station. Wards Corner would be a natural. Now, we hear that the second leg of light rail will take a different route to the Naval Base; most likely from downtown, past ODU along a Hampton Boulevard route to the Naval Base.

Today, Pilot Online reports that the downtown section of the light rail project is $14.7 million over budget. There is only $29 million in contingency dollars for these kind of events. The downtown section has already eaten up half of the contingency money. Councilman Randy Wright is Council’s representave to H.R.T. Please email him at randy.wright@norfolk.gov if you are concerned about this overage.
