Ward One Candidate Responses, Question #1

April 14, 2010

These candidate responses are being provided in three parts.  All three questions can be found in the article, Brewer, Protogyrou, and Saunders Questionnaire.  We thank the candidates for their willingness to run for office and for the time they took to answer our questions.

Question #1: As you know, Wards Corner Now concerns itself with issues that directly affect the Greater Wards Corner Area.  Please list and describe those issues that are, in your opinion, the most pressing issues affecting the Greater Wards Corner Area.

Chuck Brewer’s Response: I called Mr. Brewer and he stated that he would not participate in this Candidate Questionnaire.

Andy Protogyrou, Candidate for City Council, Ward 1

Andy Protogyrou, Candidate for City Council, Ward 1

Andy Protogyrou’s Response:  Wards Corner has been characterized as the Times Square of the south.  Like Times Square, which fell from grace and transformed itself, our own Times Square is in the beginning of its own renaissance.  Wards Corner is the economic engine of the city of Norfolk and sits at the gateway to the world’s largest naval base. It also provides the first impression of a business corridor when one enters Norfolk from the west.  Though the question seeks an answer of plural issues affecting Wards Corner, the main issue that Ward One cannot wait for any longer is prioritizing the redevelopment of the Wards Corner area.

Ironically, when one examines the Norfolk Redevelopment website, the Greater Wards Corner Comprehensive Plan is one of the oldest plans that remains on the site. The performance over years involving the fruition of the plan’s vision has been anemic at best.
Redevelopment and prioritizing same involves the marketing of the Wards Corner area to local and out-of-town developers, assisting in current business growth and marketing it throughout the Hampton Roads area.  In general, the proper marketing for redevelopment assists in expanding the tax base to allow for better schools and creates jobs which reduces crime.

Barbara Saunders, Candidate for City Council, Ward 1

Barbara Saunders, Candidate for City Council, Ward 1

Barbara Saunders’ Response: The Greater Wards Corner Area is challenged by being in two wards. The Ward 1 side, which is on the west side of Granby Street, is developed. We have Walgreen’s, Rite Aid along with a full set of tenants in the shopping strip.  But the past leadership for Ward 1 has made promises for upgrading the east side without effectively working with Ward 2 leadership, as well as, the owners of the two large privately owned properties. Now after eight years those promises seem as empty as the store fronts on the east side of Granby, where there are only a few shops that are still open and they are suffering. It is sad that we have to live in that area witnessing the decline of an area so full of potential. All that being said, I think the three issues that are most pressing for the Greater Wards Corner Area are:

  • Empty retail space
  • Crime
  • Public perception that the problem is too big.

The Virginian-Pilot has done a feature on the Wards Corner barber shop, 15 Barbers,  titled “Where were the good old days? They were here at Wards Corner Barber Shop“.

Barber Reggie Minnix worked at the shop for 20 years and owned it for the last 10. Minnix died last summer and left the shop to his children. His son, Dean Minnix, a land surveyor, and daughter, Stephanie Thornton, hope to sell the business to an entrepreneurial barber, like their father.

“Our biggest desire is that it remains a barber shop,” Minnix said. “We want it to keep the nostalgia it currently has.”

Minnix said he has a prospective buyer and is hopeful the business will remain.

Hadjikakos out, Andy Protogyrou in for Ward 1

January 20, 2010

John Hadjikakos has sent an email to supporters notifying them that he is no longer seeking the Ward 1 council seat and instead will step aside and support Andy Protogyrou (who has yet to formally announce).

Here is John’s letter:

Dear Friends:

I have been humbled by all of the wonderful support received regarding my interest in running for the Ward 1 city council seat in Norfolk.  The reason behind my seeking office is to be an strong advocate for Ward 1 so that the area receives its fair share of attention from the City.  As a corporate citizen of the area since 1988, a taxpayer that will be paying close to $100,000 in real estate taxes in the Willoughby/Ocean View area, as well as a new voter to the area I have concerns with the substandard housing found in our ward, the untapped commercial potential of the Wards Corner area, and the fact that the Wards Corner Comprehensive Plan has not yet been effectuated.

My old friend Andy Protogyrou has recently decided to run for this seat.  I am convinced that Andy will do an outstanding job representing the best interests of Ward 1 and will communicate its needs effectively.  He is an eloquent speaker, was raised in the area, and is now raising his family here.  As an attorney and substitute judge in Norfolk he has first hand knowledge of the terrible impact that crime has on our neighborhoods.  I think that Andy is an outstanding candidate and will make a superb Councilman for our Ward.  As such, I have no interest in taking way needed votes that can seal his victory.

I will actively assist Andy in any way that I can and will start my support for him with a $1,000 contribution to his campaign.  I hope that all of you will provide your assistance to his effort.

To my friends that have already provided me with campaign contributions, your checks will be returned within the next few days.

Thank you so very much for all of your assistance and friendship

Sincerely

John Hadjikakos

East Little Creek Road – Norfolk’s shooting gallery

September 19, 2009

Commentary:

The East Little Creek Road Corridor between Wards Corner and Wal-Mart is becoming  a gun range with  humans as targets. Two murders this week in the 800 block of Banaker Road. One murder last week in the 300 block of Fort Worth Avenue and today, Saturday,  another shooting in the 800 block of East Little Creek Road. Click here for story.   Why isn’t Norfolk going to war on this dysfunction that is becoming a part of every day life in our area? Is it because most of the  killings and shootings involve black folks? If this criminal activity were taking place in Downtown, you want to bet that the Mayor and several City Council folks would have their mugs all over the television news. Case in point – The Granby Theater shooting in March of 2007. All hell broke loose in the city’s officialdom.  Click here for story . Why is violence in one part of the city dealt with severely and in other areas almost ignored? One answer is institutional racism. Black folks killing each other in Norfolk  is ok as long as it doesn’t effect the economic development efforts in Downtown.
