The following information update was handed out at the June Ward’s Corner Taskforce meeting and was provided courtesy of the Department of Public Works and Assistant Director of Public Works, Alice Kelly.
Discussion and Action Items
1. Traffic Signal update (Little Creek & Granby) & (Little Creek and Farm Fresh Entrance)
Upgrading signal at Little Creek Road and Granby and Little Creek and Farm Fresh entrance and associated ADA work. New signals are fully operational. jrs 6/2/08 Street name signs to be installed within 10 days. Street lights at intersection to be installed by Dominion Virginia Power within 30-60 days.
2. Thole Street Traffic Calming Improvements
New landscape medians along the 300 & 600 Blocks of Thole St. Bids received May 20th. City to award contract upon VDOT approval. Construction to begin late July. Contract completion time is 45 days. hlr 6/4/08
3. Curb Ramps Wards Corner ADA Improvements
Phase III(B) work complete arb 6/4/08
CDBG funding allocated for curb ramps at roadway intersections throughout Titustown. Plans being finalized and public advertisement scheduled for June with construction to begin late summer. arb 6/4/08
4. Police -2nd precinct
The proposed site is in the Central Business Park. Design is underway and the building will be designed to be LEED (green building) certified.
5. Pedestrian Crosswalk signs on Louisiana Ave.
Signs are in- Working on policy for partnership with business for maintenance and safety issues (moving signs that are knocked over or pushed into traffic, storm issues etc.) Finalizing policy based on input from City Atty Office. City Atty office have made final recommendations. Final to be forwarded to Dir PW. Jrs
6. Newport Ave
Traffic speed study Moving forward with the first phase of the project. Work includes installation of marked parking lane between Little Creek Rd & Kingsley Lane and marked bulb-out at Norview Elem School student crossing location. jrs 5/08
The proposed pavement marking plan has been sent to Talbots Park and Wards Corner Civic League presidents for review and comments. Implementation will be scheduled once the community approval has been received. ga 06/04/08
7. Request to redo Crosswalks at Little Creek Road & Granby Street similar to crosswalks in Titustown
Install four, full imprint crosswalks. Engineers are currently designing project and will use current city resurfacing contractor to repair, resurface and install imprint at intersection. Work tentatively scheduled to begin Summer 08.
8. Request to look at pedestrian crossing options on East Little Creek near Fort Worth in front of church near interstate off-ramp
Due to the limited traffic signal infrastructure that is currently in place and layout of the intersection, a new signal design and geometric improvements would be necessary. Estimated cost $168,000. Design & construction to begin with FY09 budget cycle.
9. Repair work in Denby Park
PW is working with property owners to get concrete driveway aprons and sidewalk replaced. As part of project focus, driveway and sidewalk repairs have been assessed by staff. Property owners have been notified of repairs needed.
Department of Utilities Projects
10. PS 27 Force Main
Granby to North shore to Burleigh north on Newport to railroad tracks. Pipe work 90% complete. Pavement restoration to begin in June
11. Talbot Hall Phase 3
Oak grove and Sinclair Street – To begin late Spring Early Summer
12. Pumps Stations 100, 104, 105
100 -By Hospital emergency entrance – replacing pump station – sheet work being done to be complete by end of Summer.
104 – West Belvedere – Lane closure and work underway with new traffic pattern to be complete in 2-4 weeks
105 – Behind Hospital – pipe work complete 90% complete
13. Virginian Drive
Resurfacing to be done in conjunction with Utilities’ water main replacement project. Some service lines to be complete and coordination with businesses on Virginian Drive. Contractor completed water main work. Roadway resurfacing of Virginian Dr. complete.
Completed Work – To be dropped off of list next month
14. Monticello Village
Replacing curb to help drainage issues. Work includes the area bounded by East and West Glen Roads and Little Creek Road. Work completed.
15. Granby St. Mid-block crossing north of Little Creek Rd.
Work completed and operational. jrs 5/08
16. Little Creek Rd. & Lankford St.
Replacement of the two knocked down overhead sign structures that had the pedestrian crossing signs and flashing yellow lights. The new installation will have pedestrian push buttons that will actuate the lights only when pedestrians are present (not 24/7). This type of operation provides more information to the motorist and increases the level of safety at the crossing. Contractor work completed. Pedestrian actuated Beacons are operational. jrs 5/27/08
