Panoramic view of Wards Corner, circa 1950

May 9, 2013
Archivists at the Virginian-Pilot came across this photo folded up in their photo files. It is comprised of three photos that have been taped and glued together. They did their best to digitally correct the fold and glue lines. It's of course Wards Corner looking south towards downtown Norfolk. The only date on the back is 1950.

Public Briefing on Interstate Route 564 Intermodal Connector Road Project

November 20, 2012

The following is a Press Release from the City of Norfolk:

564 Intermodal Connector Road Project

564 Intermodal Connector Road Project

Proposed Project:
In cooperation with the U.S. Navy and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, is preparing plans to improve access to the Naval Station Norfolk and to the Norfolk International Terminals. The primary components of the roadway improvements include a new Route 564 (I-564) Intermodal Connector, a relocated Naval Station Norfolk, Gate 6 (entry control point), a reconfigured commercial vehicle inspection station for Naval Station Norfolk and consideration for a future Air Terminal Interchange with the Intermodal Connector roadway. The four-lane divided connector mainline would extend from existing Route I-564 on the east to the Naval Station Norfolk (Virginia Avenue) on the west.

In order to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) associated with the transfer of land from the U.S. Navy to VDOT for the road, the U.S. Navy is preparing an Environmental Assessment. The FHWA intends to adopt this EA and complete additional studies in order to better inform a decision document.  Critical components of meeting the requirements of NEPA include soliciting public input and the consideration of such input in the documentation and decision-making process.

Public Information Meeting:
A public information meeting has been scheduled for December 11, 2012 between the hours of 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM in the Sewells Point Elementary School, 7928 Hampton Boulevard, Norfolk, VA.  The purpose of this meeting is to provide the public with information regarding this project’s scope, purpose and need, and preferred alternative. Representatives of VDOT, the Navy, City of Norfolk and FHWA will be available to informally discuss specific issues and answer questions during the open forum portion of the meeting.

Preliminary design concepts and general information regarding the proposed project will be available for viewing and to aid in discussing details of the possible effects on adjacent properties. All interested citizens, groups and businesses are invited to attend the public information meeting.

Please contact, Mr. Jack Van Dop, Senior Technical Specialist, FHWA at (703) 404-6282 or Mr. Phillip Rinehart, Project Manager, VDOT at (757) 494-5478 for any questions related to this announcement.

Cottage Road Park splits from Oakdale Farms/Denby Park Civic League

September 20, 2012
Boundaries of Cottage Road Park

Boundaries of Cottage Road Park Civic League

For years Oakdale Farms, Denby Park, and Cottage Row Park have shared a civic league aptly titled “Oakdale Farms/Denby Park/Cottage Row Park Civic League” accordingly to the city.  It appears that a recent disagreement between the combined civic league and residents in the Cottage Road Park area about a proposed rezoning has resulted in a new civic league – Cottage Road Park Civic League.

The disagreement was over the proposed rezoning of 7482 Wellington Road which is to the rear of the old Speedy Gonzalez on Tidewater Drive.  The proposal was from Cook-Out Restaurant, a North Carolina BBQ chain that would have combined the Speedy Gonzalez property with 7482 Wellington Road.  Cook-Out was proposing a 24 hour double drive-thru store.

The Oakdale Farms/Denby Park/Cottage Row Park Civic League voted in favor of the Cook-Out rezoning but residents on and around Wellington Road objected.  The objections resulted in Cook-Out withdrawing their application for the rezoning and probably looking for a location elsewhere in the city.

Cottage Road Park Civic League’s website states:

Why a Civic League of Our Own?

Last month, the Oakdale Farms/Denby Park/Cottage Row Park Civic League, which had claimed our neighborhood, voted to support the developers of a 24-hour fast food restaurant that would have rezoned residential property on Wellington Road against the voiced opposition of residents. This action would have turned one side of Wellington into the back ends of businesses on Tidewater drive, and also brought unwanted noise, and traffic 24 hours a day. A two-day effort by representatives of our neighborhood garnered enough opposition that the developers withdrew their rezoning request before it could be voted on. During that effort, there was an almost unanimous interest in forming our own civic league to protect against future threats.

The new civic league meets at 7 PM on the first Monday of each month at the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local Union 110 Building, 520 Naval Base Road, Norfolk, Virginia 23505.  Their first meeting is scheduled for October 1, 2012.

Brief update on the Harris Teeter Shopping Center

August 27, 2012

According to the property owners, things are moving along well with the redevelopment of the southwest corner of Wards Corner.  As anyone who has driven through Wards Corner in the last few weeks has seen, the old A.J. Gators building has been torn down and there is a large pit where dirt and old storage tanks have been removed.  Most of the environmental work associated with that old A.J. Gators site is now complete.

Asbestos is being removed from the other buildings remaining on the site and they will be demolished within the next 1-2 months pending a demolition permit from the City.
