Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center designated a comprehensive stroke center

January 11, 2017

The following article appeared in the Daily Press:

Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk received certification from DNV GL Healthcare as a comprehensive stroke center, the health system announced.

“With stroke care, you must have not only the best clinicians and resources, but also the ability to act quickly and organizationally with exceptional efficiency because of the time-critical nature and complexity of a stroke,” said John R. Baker, M.D., medical director of the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Neurovascular Center and the Neuroscience ICU. “This certification from DNV GL validates all the efforts we have put into our stroke care program in order to ensure the health and safety of our patients.”

The certification is based on standards set by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association and shows the medical center addresses the full spectrum of stroke care from diagnosis and education to treatment and rehabilitation, according to a news release.

All Bon Secours’ Virginia hospitals are certified stroke centers with six primary stroke centers, a stroke-ready free-standing emergency department and two comprehensive stroke centers.

Latest City Of Norfolk Winter Storm Update

January 8, 2017

Good afternoon all.
It’s sunny and we know you probably want to venture outside.
First, we ask you to stay off the roads.  While many are plowed, the roads are icy.  Until it warms up, ice will remain in certain spots.  For your safety, unless you have to travel, please don’t.
As you know, Norfolk received a lot of snow.  In our efforts to clear the snow, plows pushed snow to edges of roadways which in some cases, blocks driveways and neighborhood streets.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you leaving your home or neighborhood.  Hopefully with Mother Nature’s help, the warmer temps in the coming days will help melt the piles.
If you need help,   Operation Blessing Snow Buddies program has volunteers to help eligible residents.  Call 757-274-8650.
As a reminder, the City is unable to plow neighborhood streets.  Our plow equipment is large.  Most of our neighborhoods streets are narrow and we do not want to damage your car or property.
Don’t forget, if you have a sidewalk in front of your home, it’s up to you to shovel the snow off.
If you have any questions, call Norfolk Care Call Center 757-664-6510. We’re taking calls until 5pm Sunday.
Please ensure that this information reaches the masses.  Have a warm evening.

Hurricane Matthew Bulk Waste Update

November 5, 2016

The following is an update on Bulk Waste as a result of Hurricane Matthew:

A month after Hurricane Matthew slammed the region, Norfolk City teams in partnership with CrowderGulf contractors collected more than 26,000 cubic yards of storm-related debris.  That’s nearly half a football field worth of tree trucks, branches and limbs.

To make clean-up easy for residents after the storm, the City picked up bulk waste throughout October without a request.  Starting November 4th, residents are asked to once again schedule a bulk waste pickup.  Pickup will occur on the residents’ regular trash day.

CrowderGulf contractors will make a final sweep to collect large tree debris this weekend.  Beginning Monday, November 7th tree limbs larger than 6” inches diameter and quantities more than 3 cubic yards is the responsibility of the property owner to remove.

Norfolk trash trucks are equipped with GPS.  While crews collected a majority of storm debris, a few spots may have been missed.  Residents are asked to call and schedule pickup for any storm-related debris not picked up in October.

As a reminder, do not place debris near overhead wires, water meters and fire hydrants.

To schedule a bulk waste pickup, call the Norfolk Cares Call Center 664-6510 or online at www.norfolk.gov/requesttracker.aspx

Have a wonderful weekend.

Storm Damage Assessment Teams Will Be Visiting Neighborhoods This Weekend

October 14, 2016

Hello,
There will be joint city, state and federal teams to visit neighborhoods throughout the weekend to conduct more detailed damage assessments. This is a critical step if federal assistance is to be considered for our region.
It is important to know there is no set threshold of damage for federal assistance, and thus it is not guaranteed. Nonetheless, all efforts are underway to capture and communicate the costs and impacts of the storm to state and federal officials.
Lastly, if you are aware of any unmet needs, please contact our dedicated hotline at 757-793-1837. At the same time, volunteers are needed! So if you are willing to assist individuals who need a helping hand cleaning up from the storm, please call 757-284-9183. Our great friends and partners at Operation Blessing are coordinating these efforts.
As always, please continue to visit Norfolk.gov or call the Norfolk Call Center at 757-664-6510 for storm-related information.
