I like the idea but don’t we have enough grocery stores in Wards Corner? Wouldn’t a Target or something be better? We have Walmart down the street and Target is their direct competition. I’m just saying.
Harris Teeter brings class and that’s what Wards Corner needs to bring its reputation up. Good going Chris. I really look forward to this becoming reality. I will travel from where I live to shop there. Thank you.
Cheri hit the nail on the head here! Harris Teeter will be a classy anchor for the entire Wards Corner business district and go a long way toward changing our current image. In addition, it will bring upscale businesses and shoppers back to Wards Corner. This should also influence the other landlords to upgrade their properties. Thanks to all who are making this happen!
I have very big doubts about this. The third grocery store in almost the same block? “A classy anchor” (see previous post) on the stinky Little Creek road, next to the Texas streets? Yea, dream on!
Target has had the opportunity to jump into our market. The City of Norfolk would love to have Target in another area in addition to the Military Hwy location, but they cannot force a retailer to open stores where the city wants them. We are fortunate that Harris Teeter has stepped up to the plate. No doubt other like retailers will watch their success and hopefully will follow suit. Thank you to Chris Perry and the city for their persistance in trying to improve Ward’s Corner. Maybe the other landlords in the Wards Corner area will be inspired to do the same!
Installing Harris Teeter on the sourth west side of Granby and
Little Creek is a big mistake. It would be much better to destroy
the empty buidlings on the northwest corner where the old Peoples pharmacy used to be located. There is much more space for parking near that location.
It’s a larger lot and more run down, not all stores are in use
I don’t understand why this part of Wards Corner is being considered for this project. I think it would be wonderful to have these two stores at Wards Corner but use the other side where most of the stores are empty not the side of Wards Corner where the store are occupied.
different landlords own each section…you can’t force the landlord to remodel to make the store attractive to potential tenants. Apparently the landlord on that side of Little Creek is not interested in tenants..hence, the empty stores.
We just moved to Ward’s Corner and think that having a Harris Teeter would be awesome. As it stands now, the only thing worth going to over there is the Thai Restaurant. Other than that, it is run down. We need better shops and a revibrance to Ward’s Corner and harris Teeter is a great start!!!
Terrible idea! I understand the need to revitalize Wards Corner but the Perry shopping center is very much occupied & this will put a lot of locals out of business. The city needs to step up & do something about the vacant building across the street that Harvey Lindsay has a strangle hold on.
Ramona: Harvey Lindsay is the leasing and management agent for the property. They are not the landowner.
While a target store would be a great addition to Wards Corner their store size ranges from 95,000 -135,000 square ft. Both parcels being discussed are too small in size.
I for one am for anything that brings Wards Corner back to what it once was… A great area to shop, eat and bring the family… My husband & I enjoy AJ Gators and that’s it, I do not like going to the shopping center alone because I feel unsafe even with the “guards” that “walk”around.. I was raised along with many of my friends in this area and to this day call it home so anything to make it better I agree with…But I’m like some of the others on here why not focus more on the other side where Peoples used to be more vacant spots over there.
What’s going to happen to AJ Gators? They just renovated. I’m sure they can’t be too excited about this.
I dont know why they chose this site . They should work on the other side. That side needs more work.
Harris Teeter will definitely be an upgrade from what we have now. I just hope the clientele will be there to support it. What we really need is a good eatery other than a sandwich shop. Even a Denny’s or a IHop would be great. Due to demographics I doubt that a P F Chang’s or a Friday’s would be doable but would sure like to see it!
